Holiday house with a seaside theme
St Ives, Cornwall
Wella is one of three boutique holiday homes, shaped around a secluded courtyard on the beautiful “Digey” of St Ives in Cornwall. I had the privilege of designing all three – setting the overall style, including an emphasis on Cornish stone and slate inside and out, and ensuring all three were hard-wearing, yet high-spec. But while the external look is harmonious and traditional, inside each property has its own character, reflecting the likely users. That combination begins at the hand-forged metal gate, which features a simple elongated fish motif, produced locally in Cornwall by Jays Gates.
Wella is a two-bedroom home, designed for families. The living space is upstairs, bathed in the beautiful Cornish sun from the large skylight windows and high ceilings, under which sit hand-crafted oak beams. The beautiful cabinets in the kitchen and living space were hand-made by a local joiner, George Robinson Kitchens, to my design – perfectly fitting the space and creating natural divides between the living, dining and cooking zones. Painted blue to give a seaside theme, they make the whole home tranquil, while the addition of built-in flat screen TVs and a modern wood fire add a contemporary feel. Downstairs, the bedrooms – each with an en-suite – are equally full of personality.
The master features wallpaper with a witty St Ives design, while the second bedroom is papered in soothing aquatic green. Again, both are fitted to a very high standard that makes optimum use of space, with handmade wardrobes and built-in TVs. Throughout, there are Cornish touches – like paintings, ornaments and soft furnishings from local artists.
