Cosy holiday retreat with a beachside theme
St Ives, Cornwall
Juliot is one of three boutique holiday homes, shaped around a secluded courtyard on the beautiful “Digey” of St Ives in Cornwall. I had the privilege of designing all three – setting the overall style, including an emphasis on Cornish stone and slate inside and out, and ensuring all three were hard-wearing, yet high-spec. But while the external look is harmonious and traditional, inside each property has its own character, reflecting the likely users. That combination begins at the hand-forged metal gate, which features a simple elongated fish motif, produced locally in Cornwall by Jays Gates.
Cosy Juliot is a one-bedroom property, so is designed with couples in mind. All on the ground floor, it uses bright seaside colours and open plan living area to provide a bright and welcoming space. The granite worktops in the kitchen suggest the nearby waves, while the hardwood cabinets were hand-made by a local joiner, George Robinson Kitchens, to my design.
The bedroom features coral-patterned wallpaper and the bedside lamps, equipped with beach hats, are one of the many touches of humour throughout. One of the absolute joys of the project was searching out work from local artists to provide those. But there’s luxury too in the long Loaf sofa and built-in flat-screen TVs, including in the elegant teal bathroom, with underfloor heating.
